The honest picture of the space right now
The LLM wave has been both an opportunity and a disruption for wandb. On one hand, the need for experiment tracking, evaluation infrastructure, and model versioning has expanded dramatically — every company building on top of LLMs is learning that you need to track what you're doing. But the pace of change in the LLM tooling space means that the product direction requires more conviction and adaptability than it did when the core use case was more stable. If you're someone who needs a clearly defined roadmap to do your best work, this is worth thinking about honestly.
The company is in a position most companies would envy — deep adoption among the ML practitioner community, strong brand, growing enterprise contracts — but the transition from ML experiment tracking to AI development platform is not complete, and the people joining now are part of figuring that out.
What makes a strong candidate
Strong wandb candidates have used the product, have opinions about it, and can describe specific things they'd want to change or build. They have enough depth in the ML or platform domain to contribute immediately, and enough curiosity about the adjacent domain to grow into it. The community dimension of the company — the fact that wandb has genuine advocates in the ML research community — means that candidates who have participated in that community in any way, through writing, through OSS contributions, through conference work, tend to resonate.
What doesn't land: candidates who approach it as a generic infrastructure or ML engineering role, and candidates who haven't engaged with the product or the ecosystem before applying.
