That shapes who gets hired, how decisions get made, and what it's like to work there in ways that are worth understanding before you apply.
The OSS-first hiring filter
The open source DNA isn't marketing at Grafana — it's a real constraint on how they hire. Strong candidates typically have some track record of working in public: open source contributions, public writing about technical problems, conference talks, GitHub histories that tell a story. Not because any individual checkbox matters, but because the culture assumes a baseline fluency with making decisions in public, receiving criticism from external contributors, and caring about the experience of people who will never pay you a dollar.
This doesn't mean you have to have committed to Grafana's repos. It means you should be able to articulate how you think about building for an external audience, not just internal users. Engineers are expected to move across layers — someone working on Loki's ingester might be pulled into a discussion about the Grafana frontend query editor if there's a UX problem that's really an API design problem. This isn't chaotic; it's the natural consequence of a distributed team that moves fast and doesn't have the headcount to silo everything.
The interview process reflects this. Technical rounds test depth in your primary area, but there are usually questions that probe adjacent knowledge — can the backend engineer talk about how users will actually experience the query they're optimizing? Can the frontend engineer talk about the data model behind the panel they're building?
Remote-first for real
Grafana Labs is distributed in a way that's closer to Basecamp or GitLab than to "we have offices but you can work from home." There's no headquarters culture setting the tone. The company spans timezones in a way that makes synchronous communication the exception, not the default.

The employees who fit well are ones who feel that tension too — who want to be good stewards of the OSS product even when the commercial product incentives might pull differently.
This isn't naive idealism. It's a legitimate competitive moat. Grafana's position in the observability ecosystem depends on the open source versions being trustworthy enough that developers adopt them and then choose to pay for the cloud offering. Engineers who understand that alignment tend to make better decisions at Grafana than engineers who treat the OSS version as a loss leader.
What makes strong candidates
Strong Grafana candidates have technical depth in distributed systems or frontend performance engineering, can communicate clearly in writing, have some relationship with the open source ecosystem, and have opinions about observability as a practice rather than just as a set of tools. The interviewers are often contributors to the projects you'd be working on — they can tell the difference between someone who's read the docs and someone who's thought about the design decisions.
What doesn't land: candidates who approach the role as primarily a commercial software job, candidates who've used Grafana dashboards but don't have a mental model of the systems behind them, and candidates who can't articulate why open source matters beyond "it's popular."
