Global network platform providing security, performance, and reliability.

Getting hired at Cloudflare

Cloudflare is one of the most consequential infrastructure companies in the world. Their network sits between the internet and a significant fraction of the world's websites — handling DNS, CDN, DDoS protection, Zero Trust security, and increasingly, compute at the edge. If you care about working on systems at genuine internet scale, few companies offer that opportunity.

The company is public, profitable on an operating basis, and still growing fast. It's a more stable environment than a pre-revenue startup, but with a harder technical mission and a culture that takes both security and performance seriously at a level most companies can't match.

Who they're hiring

Cloudflare hires primarily in engineering (network, security, edge compute, product engineering), product, and go-to-market. The engineering org is large and broken into distinct areas:

  • Network engineering — the core of the company. The people who maintain and scale Cloudflare's global network across 300+ data centers.
  • Security engineering — building and maintaining WAF, DDoS mitigation, Zero Trust products, bot management.
  • Edge compute — Cloudflare Workers, R2, D1, and the broader developer platform. This is a fast-growing area.
  • Product engineering — the dashboard, APIs, developer tooling, and the features customers interact with directly.

On GTM: Cloudflare has both a strong PLG motion (the free tier drives massive top-of-funnel) and an enterprise sales org. For enterprise roles, the technical depth of the product means AEs and SEs need genuine technical credibility.

The process

Cloudflare's process is thorough and technically rigorous. For engineering roles:

  1. Recruiter screen — background and fit
  2. Technical screen — typically a coding interview (LeetCode-style or systems) depending on the role
  3. Onsite loop — 4-6 interviews including: systems design, coding, domain expertise (networking/security depending on role), a values/culture conversation
  4. Offer

The systems design interview at Cloudflare is worth preparing for specifically. They care about how you think about distributed systems, latency, consistency tradeoffs, and failure modes — because these are things their systems actually deal with. Vague hand-waving about "horizontal scaling" won't land the same way it might at a company where these problems are theoretical.

For network-focused roles, there's often a more specific technical interview on networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, BGP, DNS, TLS. If you're coming from a traditional software background rather than systems/infra, it's worth brushing up.

What the culture is actually like

Cloudflare has a reputation as a serious engineering culture. The people there are genuinely into the technical problems — networking, cryptography, security at scale, distributed systems. There's less tolerance for surface-level knowledge than at product companies where the engineering is primarily building features on top of APIs.

The company is values-driven in a specific way: they have been publicly vocal about their principles around internet freedom, content policy, and how they think about being infrastructure for the internet. This has sometimes put them in uncomfortable positions — they've been criticized both for acting and for not acting on specific customers. People who join Cloudflare tend to be genuinely engaged with these questions, not just looking for a job.

The culture is relatively mature and stable compared to early-stage startups. There are real processes, real management chains, and real organizational complexity. This is a feature for people who want structure; it can feel slow for people who prefer startup informality.

What they look for

Technical depth. Cloudflare does not hire generalists who "can learn the networking stuff." They want people who have genuine depth in systems, security, or networks. For product engineering roles, the bar is still high — they care about correctness, performance, and security as first-class concerns.

Security mindset. Even for non-security roles, the security-first orientation of the company means that engineers are expected to think about threat models, attack surfaces, and safe defaults. If security is an afterthought for you, it'll be a rough adjustment.

Scale awareness. The systems at Cloudflare operate at a scale most engineers will never touch in their careers. People who understand what happens at 10x, 100x scale — who have intuitions about caching, edge cases at volume, and the economics of distributed systems — fit naturally.

Communication. Cloudflare has a significant number of remote employees and is distributed globally. Clear written communication and the ability to collaborate asynchronously are genuinely valued.

The Cloudflare Workers / developer platform angle

If you're interested in edge compute, Cloudflare is one of the most interesting places to be right now. Workers is a real compute platform (not just a CDN), and they've built a growing ecosystem around it: R2 (object storage), D1 (SQLite at the edge), KV, Queues, AI. The platform team is competing with AWS Lambda@Edge, Fastly, and Deno Deploy.

For engineers who want to shape how developers build at the edge — this is the forefront of that problem.

Things worth knowing

The interview difficulty is real. Cloudflare is one of the harder technical interview gauntlets in the industry for infrastructure roles. Plan to prepare specifically for systems design and networking/security fundamentals. The investment is worth it if you get in.

The mission is not abstract. A meaningful fraction of internet traffic touches Cloudflare infrastructure. When you're debugging something at Cloudflare, the stakes are real — a bug in their systems can affect millions of users. People who are energized by that responsibility (rather than anxious about it) do well.

Career paths are real here. Because the company is public and has real organizational depth, there are genuine career paths at every level. Staff engineers, principals, and distinguished engineers actually exist and are meaningful. For people who want to grow into senior IC roles without moving into management, there's a ladder here.

San Francisco HQ + global presence. The HQ is in SF, but there are large offices in London, Singapore, Austin, and elsewhere. Remote is real for some teams, hybrid is the default for others.

Should you apply?

If you're a systems engineer, security engineer, or networking specialist who wants to work on some of the hardest infrastructure problems on the internet — Cloudflare is one of the best options in the world. The technical bar is high, the problems are real, and the scale is unlike anywhere else. For product engineers and GTM roles, the opportunity is also strong, especially if the security and infrastructure context genuinely interests you.
